Always the chicken race bridesmaid…

Today was a sad day for me - for the second year in a row. What are the chances that all the cards would fall into place in just the perfect way AGAIN so that I would miss out on what is obviously one of the most important and exciting days in my small town?? Clearly the answer to that question is 100%.

Today was the Charity Chicken Race in my neck o' the woods. And it fell on the exact day and time as my oldest son's soccer game…just like it did last year - my first year owning chickens and being aware of the race. I mean I'm a chicken lover and I live in a town that is so dedicated to chickens that they hold a chicken race and I CAN'T GO! But as any mom will tell you, kids come first, so there I was on the sidelines cheering my 6-year-old's soccer team while hoards of locals darted around a racetrack holding decorated chickens experiencing full-on chicken nirvana.

And to top it all off, my son's team lost their game today, although my son did score one of the two goals for his team. But his best friend was on the winning team, so he wasn't sad that he lost since his friend was happy, and the kids are still young enough that they're just happy to be out there playing. How could I miss that?

Clearly I could not.

But I'll admit as I was sitting there, I was thinking how badly I wanted to decorate a chicken. And race a chicken. And buy chicken memorabilia. And listen to the chicken calling competition. And chuck a chicken. And fully immerse myself in local chicken culture.

Maybe next year the planets will align correctly and the game and the race will be on different days - or different times at least.

Until then I'll just chase my girls around the yard for kicks and fantasize about what would have been...

Oh my goodness, that event is made specifically for you!! You should have called and plead your case for them to change the date. You'd pulverize the competition!

I can feel your pain and feelings of being left out. I would feel that way, too. That does sound like fun. I hope it works out for you to go next year.

That just makes me sooo Clucking mad. How dare they schedule the Chicken Races the same time and day as the kids soccer? Didn't the Rat Chickens check your schedule first? Not even a phone call? I call for a full out Chicken protest. I say dump Chick poo on the Rat Chicken's yard.... oh wait that would be good for their yard..... dump it on their steps LOL

Next year IF they have the chicken balls for another clucking schedule mishap Organize your own event ..... like Chicky poo throwing.

Good luck next year.

PS I would write the Rat Chickens a letter, asking as nicely as you can if they would consider a second event NOT in Soccer season, or baseball or Football or Basketball. What the cluck... if your kids play all those sports, you do not have time for the Chicken Races.

I'd say somethin' - but Tricia made me start laughin'... and I can't stop it.

WELDRBRAT Hey now, I am doing my best to understand the cluckings of a fustrated chicken race bridesmaid.

While I do not own any chickens, I want to... that is why I hang out in here. My niece owns a few chickens in the city (yummy fresh eggs for her) you think she would bring some for me? Nope not a single fresh egg. Now to be fair, she did bake me 2 loaves of yummy bread when she and family came to visit Labor weekend. Soooo I will not complain about the eggs. I will also make her come and teach me how to care for some chicky girlz when I finally move to the country, in exchange I will teach her how to quilt.

I just watched a segment on ABC news about people in cities starting to raise chickens. How cool!

Run those girls around and whip them into shape for next year! Sew Clementine a white halter top Marilyn Monroe dress, and make her skirt fly up with your hair dryer, while the other two girls sing "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" while wearing their rhinestone studded tiaras...you'll win the whole shootin' match in 2011!

In the meantime, I'll stick pins in a soccer coach voodoo doll. That should take care of that little problem.

Oh no, heartbreaking! The event sounds amazing, but there will be others. You could always decorate a chicken on your own time, but that might make you even more depressed.

Or dare I say you could inform the boys now that next year you will be chicken racing?? I am sure they would understand the missing of one game for the opportunity to dress up a chicken and cheer for her for the afternoon. ;)
