I'm back! With a celebratory cornsicle to boot!

Thanks so much for the kind words about my oldest son starting Kindergarten. Today was a bittersweet day, but he seemed to enjoy himself, so I went along with it for his sake. I missed having him around all day and think that will be very hard to get used to. We've never used babysitters and have no family in town to look after the boys so I've had them both by my side since the day they were born - save the times when my mom comes into town for a visit and looks after them so I can grocery shop alone. It did feel very quiet and empty in the house with just one kid and little bro declared after being home about a half hour that he missed his big brother. I realize that I'm more cut out for some sort of alternative schooling environment, but since that's not an option we're plugging along with regular ole' school.

Things are progressing around here and I have some exciting chicken-related news to share later this week. To start with I wanted to show you the chickens newest favorite treat: a cornsicle. I actually made a melonsicle and a cornsicle, but the melonsicle was outmatched by the sheer awesomeness of the cornsicle. (Or should it be a cobsicle?) And it wasn't frozen, but I believe you can add "-sicle" to any food invention on a stick, thank you very much.

I jammed a bamboo skewer into the bottom of a leftover piece of grilled corn on the cob and poked it in the ground in the chickens' hoop run. They're naturally wary of new things, so I wasn't sure how they'd react.

They were on it like lions on a fresh kill. They attacked the thing with such mad abandon that I knew we'd found a new favorite chicken snack.

Maggie and Clementine made short work of the thing and by the time Sookie made her way over to it, there wasn't much left.

And after about 10 minutes there was merely a cob carcass left on the stick and three fat and happy hens.

Life is good in their world.

Too cute. I believe you've coined a new term. Your chickens are lucky I wasn't around-I'm bigger, and LOVE corn. I might have snatched it from them! :D

Glad you're doing ok, Kate. Just wait 'til the boys start dating and stuff, then you will miss them. They kinda forget about their parents when they get to be 14 or so....

Oh - you are nicer to your chickens. I just toss the cobs in to their run around here. No "iscle" for them! They love them anyway & I'm always amazed at how much they LOVE their corn! Have you tried grapes? Mine LOVE them about as much as corn & they are a riot to watch while they run around chasing each other to try & get them.

EG was saying wait until they start dating, but I thought the worse one was when the left for college. Personally I couldn't wait for them to start kindergarten, but when they left for college I was devastated. My son didn't even come home this summer, he stayed down in RI to work. Sigh.

So happy to hear you made it through the first day of Kindergarten. My dooms day still looms......

I get such a kick out of the girls, those are some well fed chickens!

Two of mine are headed off to school for the first time on Monday. We've had a good time homeschooling for years, and I'd rather continue that, but I think it's time for these two to give me a break.

It's something to consider -- seems like your boys are pretty interesting at home.

I was a stay at home mom with our 2 kids until my daughter, the younger one went to first grade. I went back to college and had a variety of jobs after that. I missed out on a lot by getting so involved in studying, and when I taught for a couple years, I worked 50 to 60 hours a week. Without these experiences, I may not have the job I have now, as a special education para-educator, which I love, but I still missed out on some things with my kids.

Anyway, I hope things go well for your guys at school and preschool. We didn't leave ours much, either.

What a fun treat for your chickens!
